A new boarding house model creating a 'home from home' feel.

Project Info

The new girls’ boarding house at Fettes is conceived as a modest courtyard building that re-establishes the formal axial planning of the original landscape in the northwest edge of the campus. The challenge of the boarding house model is accommodating the large number of bedrooms in a way that creates a warm, domestic character rather than an anonymous institutional atmosphere. By clustering the bedrooms entrances around small social areas, tucked into the corner of the plan with breakout spaces looking out to the garden, we were able to break down the formality of the corridor with places to stop and chat. The social and circulation spaces intermingle in the building creating a range of spaces from the large open plan common room and pantry to the smaller lounge spaces in each bedroom wing. A simple material palette of timber cladding punctured by full height glazing embeds the building in its woodland setting. The zinc roof pitches down towards the courtyard and a unifying canopy links the common room to the garden beyond.

“The new Dalmeny Boarding House is not only very homely and comfortable, but inspirational; with beautiful views of the College and grounds, numerous social and entertaining spaces and separate areas for quiet reflection and study. We look to encourage our girls to take advantage of these surroundings for their study and school activities, but also more generally to freely express their ideas, socialise and host events for their peers.”
